Stated Purpose
"to advance human rights worldwide."
Human Rights Watch (HRW) is dedicated to defending and protecting human rights and is made up of human rights professionals including country experts, lawyers, journalists, and academics of diverse backgrounds and nationalities. The organization engages in fact-finding, impartial reporting, effective use of media, and targeted advocacy, often in partnership with local human rights groups. HRW reports that it publishes more than 100 reports and briefings on human rights conditions in some 90 countries, generating coverage in local and international media. The organization meets with governments, the United Nations, regional groups like the African Union and the European Union, financial institutions, and corporations to advocate for changes in policy and practices that promote human rights and justice around the world. By focusing international attention where human rights are violated, the organization aims to give voices to the oppressed and hold oppressors accountable for their crimes.
