Student Conservation Association (SCA) reports that it works to conserve lands and transform lives by empowering young people of all backgrounds to plan, act and lead while they protect and restore Americas natural and cultural resources. The organization's programs provide young people aged 15-25 with opportunities to serve in crew, intern and corps programs lasting anywhere from two weeks to twelve months in urban and backcountry areas in all 50 U.S. states. In addition to its environmental impact, the organization reports that SCA service strengthens numerous life skills that foster optimal advancement and help teens prosper. SCA reports that in 2016 it engaged more than 9,600 volunteers, 4,000 of them in SCA field programs and an additional 5,500 in community service events and projects. The organization reports that in collaboration with the National Park Service, the US Forest Service and other federal, state and local agencies, SCA members rendered 1,300,000 hours of service and achieved a range of ecological outcomes including 2,095 miles of public trails and 735 miles of waterway built, improved, or maintained; 132,814 million acres of wildlife habitat made healthier through restoration projects; 935,283 people provided with environmental education. The organization reports that 70% of their alumni remain active in conservation through their careers and/or studies.
