Stated Purpose
"to promote solutions across the spectrum and throughout the life span for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; to increase the understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and to advance research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions."
AS reports that it served 58% more people in 2017 than in 2016 and provided information and resources to more than 1 million people. The organization created an autism-friendly calendar with 7,500 autism-related events. AS reports that it also expanded its career website by 70% and provided over $900,000 in grants to service organizations and families. The organization also worked with grassroots advocates and lobbied Congress to increase the NIH budget, helped prevent cuts to Medicaid services, and worked to ensure coverage of applied behavior analysis under health insurance plans. AS's MSSNG Program continued to become a resource for genomic discovery. The AS Autism Treatment Network provided care to nearly 40,000 children and teens and over 13,000 families received family navigation services in 2017. The Network hosted more than 700 training and outreach events and published 15 scientific papers. Some ($9,333,229, or 12%) of AS programs are conducted in conjunction with fund raising appeals.
