Direct Relief is a medical assistance organization that is active in all 50 states and approximately 100 other countries each year, focused on providing access to health services and essential medications for persons who need but cannot afford them. The organization serves functionally as a medical distributor and provides in-kind donations of medications, vaccines, medical equipment, and medical supplies to qualified nonprofit partners and government organizations upon request to address unmet needs that exist in areas of chronic need and also when emergencies occur. Direct Relief also provides financial grants to qualified nonprofit organizations. In 2020, the organization reports its assistance included delivering 2,600 tons (5.2 million lbs.) of medical commodities, including 223 million defined daily doses of medications and more than 30 million units of personal protective equipment (PPE), through 27,600 shipments valued at $1.4 billion to 2,833 organizations. The organization also disbursed $46.6 million in cash grants. In addition, Direct Relief conducts ongoing research and publishes a range of topic-specific maps regarding health issues such as obstetric fistula and the social vulnerability of persons in emergency-affected areas.
