Stated Purpose
"to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and independence."
America's VetDogs (AVD) provides guide, service, and hearing dogs, free of charge, to those who have served our country honorably and are blind, visually impaired, or have other disabilities and seek increased independence, mobility, and companionship assistance. Future service dogs are raised in our "prison puppy program." Inmates in correctional facilities raise puppies for one year to housebreak them and teach basic service dog tasks. Volunteer families take the dogs on weekends to socialize and expose the pups to new experiences. Then, they return to AVD for their advanced service dog training. Future guide dogs are raised by foster families called "puppy raisers" for one year before coming in for formal guide dog training. There are several training options for veterans: on campus (in residence) at AVD's 10-acre campus; combination (in residence/home training); and training entirely in a veteran's home environment. The organization reports that throughout the training, veterans and their dogs bond and learn how to work together as a team. They also learn about proper care for their dog, from grooming to exercising. After a team graduates from the program, assistance and after-care services are available to deal with any issues or concerns. AVD takes steps to promote assistance dog use throughout the United States, build public awareness for the work they do, and teach people about etiquette and interacting with assistance dogs. The organization's website features news and information about guide, hearing, and service dogs and the essential access laws that give them the right to go everywhere the public is allowed.
